Gin Rummy is a classic card game for exactly two players. Like Rummy it revolves around forming groups and sequences in the hand. Compared to Rummy, Gin Rummy has a much faster pace and is more competitive overall.
Role: Game Designer
Responsibilities: Research. game mechanics & custom rules, UX design, documentation,
Gin Rummy is the second new game that Spiele Palast developed and published after I had joined the team.
I've participated in the development from the initial research all the way through release and several years of steady maintenance and updates. In my role as the leading game designer in this project, I studied the rules of the game thoroughly, looked at existing mobile adaptations, and then designed our own interpretation of the classic card game based on the constraints of our established framework. Like in all games at the Palace of Cards, the player can choose from a selection of optional custom rules. While most of them are based on existing variations of the game, we added some of our own design.
More than in previous games our team focused its efforts on a better user experience, such as better card handling, more animations, and a better interface design, for all of which I provided the mock-ups. For the first time, there is a complete evaluation animation at the end of a round instead of a simple score sheet.
I also designed new rules for a 4-player game of Gin Rummy.
